About Me

Today is August 14th 2012.  I’ve been blogging now for 7 months – long enough, it would seem, that I’m sticking to this.  I guess I should finally write an ‘About Me’

I’m 31 years old, happily married, and living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Last summer I ran my first triathlon.  It was incredible – well, not the results.  I did awful.  But I finished.  And that was huge for me.

I’m 5’11”, and at last check, 250lbs.  I studied psychology at The University of Waterloo, and I now work in IT project management for an insurance company.  After playing competitive waterpolo in high school, I’ve spent the past 12 years of my life sedentary and out of shape.  I reached my high water mark at 268lbs.  Something had to change.

Last year I discovered triathlon.  It’s changed my life.  Triathlon is more than swimming, biking, and running.  To me it’s a lifestyle.  It’s about learning to be active.  It’s about learning to be healthy.  It’s about learning to push through and persevere.   It’s about growing as a person.  This blog is my opportunity to express this transformation, and it’s growing pains (with a little grown-up sarcasm sprinkled in).

Comments, encouragement, suggestions, and interaction are welcomed.  If you’re a triathlete, an aspiring athlete, a weekend warrior, or learning to get off the couch (like me), I hope you’ll find something here for you.

I was browsing the inter web, looking for a picture of Simon Whitfield for my daughter, and I stumbled across your site. I just read your post from earlier this week. From the sounds of it, you and I are kindred triathlete-souls! I committed to my first 70.3 in 2010 in Muskoka. I whittled myself down to a svelte (for me) 182 lbs from about 245. Then I proceeded to get hurt, make excuses, enjoy life, slog through an annual 70.3 (Mt. Tremblant 3 times + Calgary once), each race getting slightly heavier and slower than my debut. After another summer of rehabbing an ankle (mostly via pizza and beer), I am back where I started and back in the gym. Like you, I make no excuses. It’s been fun taking it off, and a lot of fun putting it back on. It’s time of both of us to take another turn on this crazy ride. Best of luck this off-season.
